currently coveting: storage and character, all in one

Though Gigi and Daddy no longer live in the house I grew up in, I vividly remember their bedroom.  I remember Gigi's pretty ginger jar lamps, flanking each side of the bed, a pretty little secretary desk paired with an upholstered wingback chair, her collection of perfume bottles, old and new, splayed on her dresser, and of course... her hope chest at the foot of the bed.  Every once in awhile, we'd pull out the contents of the hope chest... each item associated with a sweet, sweet memory... and belonging to a story that either Gigi or my Daddy would share.  The hope chest was home to cherished articles... sort of like a tiny seersucker dress that I insisted on wearing nearly every day the spring of my preschool year.

So when Gigi found this old hope chest, also known as a blanket chest in non-Southern parts of the world, I obviously reveled in the memory of the old hope chest from Gigi's room.  She and and I love the added storage, but more than that we love the history a chest offers up in bedrooms and in cozy den spaces.

Whether they live at the foot of the bed like this...

Seriously?  Over $2000.  You could probably find several for less than $1000, but you'd be hard-pressed to find one for less than $100.
