weekend find

The hostess in me loves to have fun pieces on hand that can be used over and over for many different occasions.... fun pieces like this sweet little chalkboard we just picked up for next to nothing...

When Gigi found it, she knew I wouldn't be able to part with it.
She said, "I can just see you using it at your next party."

I love it... and yes, we will probably be using it very soon to celebrate my roommate M's recent engagement!  Love to B & M!

love at first sight: vintage film

Gigi fell hard for this vintage film reel (with film) last weekend.  She couldn't not bring it home.

I'd love to see it mounted on a wall like this...

We aren't the only ones with an affinity for vintage film...

Horchow offers these vintage cameras for $595.00

And Ballard Designs has this set of three film reels for $189.00.

before and after: peeling paint

There's something about industrial furniture that makes me smile.  Thankfully, we managed to spot the metal through the peeling paint on this piece...

The before...

We took this chest home and the paint peeled right off.

The after...
12.5" H x 18.5" W X 12" D
The handles add 3" to the width.

Not sure how to incorporate it into your space?
Look at all the metal pieces in this room...

Love the storage this piece offers...

currently coveting: a message center

I am sort of truly "a place for everything and everything in it's place" kind of girl.  I get it honest (thanks Gigi).  Currently, Gigi and I are loving the idea of creating a message center for shared spaces as a sort of home for incoming/outgoing mail, lists, reminders, menus, etc.

If you've looked around, you know that creating a message center can be pricey...

This Memo Board from Home Decorators Collection retails for $59.

...but at Splash of Lime, there are few things we love more than a good deal and so we have this (believed to be Pottery Barn) Message Board for $30 $25.

Pottery Barn offers this Rustic Chalkboard for the SALE price of $199.

...but we love our version with all of its charm and its price...$30 $25

Finally, I had to add this one.  This wall-mount chalkboard from Pottery Barn retails for $249...

You've seen our version... and its only $35 $30.

weekend find: tole tray

I'm going to be real honest... the first time Gigi brought home a tole tray, I simply shook my head.  You see, I thought the tray looked dated.  Gigi educated me, explained the history of these trays, and assured me that the trays had a place in fine homes.

And though I always trust Gigi's good guidance, I wasn't completely sold.  Seeing this image; however, sort of sealed the deal and made me a true believer.  Suddenly tole trays felt less dowdy and more timeless.

I love the idea of mounting a collection of trays on a wall.
Are you interested in started a collection of tole trays?  What are your thoughts?  Are the trays chic and romantic or hoary and antiquated?

Gigi found this one over the weekend and it is for sale.  It would look great with a collection of other trays or mounted alone.

love at first sight: rock-a-bye baby

So.  This is how it happened.  On April 13th, a reader e-mailed, saying that she had two sweet baby girls and that she loved old cradles for their dolls...

Well... on April 18th, Gigi found these two sweet pieces...

Gigi thinks the sweet little rocker (made by the Williamsburg Chair Company) is from the 1950s.  Similar pieces sell for upwards of $100.

Gigi doesn't waste any time and these pieces are simply precious.  We LOVE them and they are for SALE.  E-mail us at single.splash.of.lime@gmail.com with your offers.

before and after: console table

Remember this post...

Though we knew this table needed a paint job, we loved its bones...
especially the shape of its legs.
A sweet (and very sassy) friend, M, decided she loved it as well and
wanted to make it over with glossy black paint.

Here's the after...

M, I'm so excited for you to pick it up and I can't wait to see it in your BEAUTIFUL home.
M has impeccable taste and will no doubt style it well.

currently coveting: well-styled bookshelves

One of my favorite things about the house I grew up in was the set of built in bookshelves in our den.  They housed our vast collection of books and Gigi worked at styling them, adding color with her beloved blue and white porcelain and carefully arranging and rearranging her collection of accessories.

Whether we are talking about the shelves in my childhood home, the lone ladder shelf in my current bedroom, or the built-ins I long for in my dream home, I simply love a bookshelf and hoped to share some of my favorite tips (all I know, I learned from Gigi) for creating the well-styled look I love...

1.  Try organizing books by color...
Just like the clothes in my closet, my books live in ROY G BIV order.  And though I'm fond of my styling, I simply can't compete with the perfection that is this Windsor Smith room

2.  Try stacking books in different ways...
Place books horizontally and vertically or even with their spines towards the walls...

3.  Try adding layers... over time...
Bookshelves aren't just for books.  Add a collection of fun accessories, photographs, and artwork.  Vary your heights and textures.  And finally, try to leave room around your pieces so as not to clutter.

Gigi and I want to help you start your collection of fun accessories.
We found this pair of horse bookends...
And this single, rearing horse bookend.
Inspiration?  Look no further...
