before and after: old mirror to new chalkboard

One of my favorite things I own is a chalkboard that hangs above my buffet.  The piece was originally a mirror that my sister-in-law (shout out to SPT) picked up at a Habitat Re-Store and passed along to me at one of our yard sales.  Though I don't have a picture of the before, I can tell you that in only a few steps we took an old mirror like this...
And turned it into (forgive the iPhone photos) this...
"10 Ways to Love"... thank you Pinterest!
Here's what we did:
  • First, we removed the mirror and used spray paint to cover the frame.
  • We measured the mirror and had a piece of sheet metal cut to replace the glass.
  • Then we painted the sheet metal with chalkboard paint, applying 2-3 coats.
  • We secured the new, magnetic chalkboard sheet.
  • Finally, we added a wire to the back so that we would be able to hang it.
I generally update the chalkboard seasonally... a football schedule in the fall, "Twas the Night before Christmas" from the end of November through December, a monogram for a Little Man baby shower, and really, the possibilities are endless.  It's the most perfect, personal touch.
"Twas the Night Before Christmas" in celebration of the happiest season of the year...
Happy DIY-ing and a word to the wise... if you attempt this on your own, you'll need to use a piece of chalk to "shade" the entire chalkboard surface.  To do this, simply hold the chalk on its side and cover the entire board.  Wipe clean and then you'll be good to go.  "Shading" helps prevent the "ghost" effect you so often see on chalkboard surfaces.
